Air Conditioning Efficiency

Well, spring has sprung and we are all look­ing for­ward to warmer weath­er, sun­shine and sweet sum­mer time.  Though it is won­der­ful to sleep with the win­dows open on a hot sum­mer night and lis­ten to the sounds of nature, it can also be very uncom­fort­able with the humid­i­ty that often accom­pa­nies sum­mer weather.

As with any­thing, air con­di­tion­ers are not all cre­at­ed equal.  Let’s talk about ener­gy effi­cien­cy.  The effi­cien­cy of an air con­di­tion­er is mea­sured by the sea­son­al ener­gy effi­cien­cy ratio (SEER).  The ratio is the amount of cool­ing pro­duced (BTU) divid­ed by the amount of elec­tric­i­ty (watts) used.  The high­er that the SEER rat­ing is, the more effi­cien­cy your cool­ing sys­tem will have.

If you look on AEP Ohio’s web­site, you will find that they rec­om­mend replac­ing air con­di­tion­er units that are 5.4 tons or less with units that have a SEER of 14.0 or more.  They also rec­om­mend that units that are 5.4 ton or greater be replaced with units with high ener­gy effi­cien­cy ratio of 10.2 or more.  AEP says this will reduce oper­at­ing costs for the life of the unit.

There are many brands of heat­ing and cool­ing equip­ment.  Your local HVAC com­pa­ny will be able to help you under­stand the dif­fer­ences between sim­i­lar equip­ment and they can advise the best unit for your busi­ness needs.  Most com­pa­nies offer free esti­mates.  Don’t wait until sum­mer to pur­chase as HVAC con­trac­tors get very busy.  If you are inter­est­ed in pur­chas­ing a cool­ing sys­tem, sched­ule your esti­mate soon.
