Social distancing in these unsettled times is allowing us to get projects done or cleaning chores accomplished. Have any of you been sorting through all those papers that accumulate? Have you ever really looked at all of the information on your electric bill? It can be quite confusing and overwhelming. When the social distancing restrictions are lifted, we will do a video to help explain everything about your electric bill. This will give you the information to educate you on what to look for when you get those phones calls. You want to be sure that you are paying the best rate available for your business. Who doesn’t like to save money?
So for now, let’s just get familiar with some of the terminology that electric companies use. If you have a copy of your electric bill go ahead and grab it. If you get your billing online, log in to your electric bill account.
Your electric bill will show various types of charges. Let’s use AEP as our electric company for this information.
Generation service is the cost of the electricity that we use.
Transmission service is the cost of transporting the electricity via high-voltage lines from the generating plant to local substations.
Distribution service is the cost of delivering that electricity to your business.
Customer charges are the fixed costs for services that include meters, meter reading and customer billing. These costs are not affected by how much electricity you use.
As business owners, managers, or employees our job is to always find ways to save money. Did you know that you can also “shop” for the best deal on electricity costs? We look for ways to save money on supplies, products, and anything we use in our day to day business operations. Let’s save some money on our utilities too.
