So for now, let’s just get famil­iar with some of the ter­mi­nol­o­gy that elec­tric com­pa­nies use.  If you have a copy of your elec­tric bill go ahead and grab it.  If you get your billing online, log in to your elec­tric bill account.

Your elec­tric bill will show var­i­ous types of charges.  Let’s use AEP as our elec­tric com­pa­ny for this information.

Gen­er­a­tion ser­vice is the cost of the elec­tric­i­ty that we use.

Trans­mis­sion ser­vice is the cost of trans­port­ing the elec­tric­i­ty via high-volt­age lines from the gen­er­at­ing plant to local substations.

Dis­tri­b­u­tion ser­vice is the cost of deliv­er­ing that elec­tric­i­ty to your business.

Cus­tomer charges are the fixed costs for ser­vices that include meters, meter read­ing and cus­tomer billing.  These costs are not affect­ed by how much elec­tric­i­ty you use.
